JR's Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness Web Site

Warcraft II – Tides of Darkness is a real time strategy game based in the fantasy world of Humans, Orcs, Elves, Dwarfs etc.  There are two sides Humans and Orcs who fight against each other to the death.

History

Created by Blizzard Entertainment in 1995 based upon Warcraft – Humans & Orcs (Game of the Year 1994).  Voted Best game of the year 1996 by PC Gamer.  This was one the first multiplayer real time strategy games and was made popular by the internet which you were able to play over against other users.  It came out the same sort of time as Doom2 & Sim City 2000 and was designed for use on 486’s and the early Pentiums.

My Experience of Warcraft II

I first played Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness at university after my third year exams in June 1996.  Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness was installed on our halls LAN and we played seven way battles for two weeks in-between sleep and parties.

After leaving University I bought a PC & Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness and played the campaigns and learned the advanced strategies.   I bought a modem and played against opponents over the free kali gaming network.  Every few months I would meet up with old university friends play over a LAN in a house.  I started playing other good multiplayer real time Strategy games in early 1998.  First "Total Annihilation" by Core, then "Age of Empires" by Microsoft, before "Starcraft" by Blizzard came out - "Warcraft in Space".

Playing Warcraft II Today

Since upgrading to a high speed Pentium II, I have had to use a slow.exe utility to make Warcraft II playable.  The game screen scrolling speeds are not limited (neither key scrolling or mouse scrolling).  I recommend using moslo.com to reduce the processor speed to that of a 120Mhz Pentium for reasonable playability.  Alternatively buy the Warcraft II -Battle.Net edition which has updated the original game to run on fast PCs & run on Blizzards Free Gaming Network Battle.Net.  I recommend buying Warcraft II - Battle.Net Edition because it only costs £15 in the UK and contains updated versions of both the original game & the expansion kit.
