June 2003 - Quick Film Reviews

Dancer in the Dark -  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0168629) 2000
Lars von Trier directs this highly depressing and sad film starring Bjork.  Bjork plays an mother with a inherited progressive blinding disease, who although almost blind continues to work for many hours in a dangerous factory.  She is saving for the operation, which will stop her son eventually going blind.  Her life spiral’s downward out of control.  Whenever a particular hard or sad event happens in her life, she fantasies about spontaneous singing and dancing, like her favourite musicals.  This is a very good film, guaranteed to make you cry, but not the sort of film you would watch many times for pleasure.

Imdb score = 7.8.

8/10
ET: The Extra Terrestrial - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0083866) 1982
Very much a children's film but still very enjoyable.  Steven Spielberg's classic film features a group of children who befriend an Extra Terrestrial who was stranded on Earth.

Imdb score = 7.8 and is currently number 225 in Imdb's top 250 films of all time.

8/10
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0173840) 2001
I believe this is based upon  the Final Fantasy computer game but don't let that put you off.  This is a cleverly animated  film with an interesting science fiction plot about fighting surreal alien invaders.

Imdb score = 6.6.

8/10
I Am Sam - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0277027) 2001
This is bit of a soppy film but still enjoyable.  Sean Penn plays a mentally retarded single father who struggles to bring up his daughter alone.  His daughter is taken into care and he goes to court to get her back.  Michelle Pfeiffer plays his lawyer.

Imdb score = 7.2.

8/10
Talk To Her (Hable con ella) - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0287467) 2002
This is an extremely good Spanish film which centers around a psychopath who nurses a comatose woman patient in a hospital.  It also features some bull fighting and the strangest and amusing silent movie I have ever seen.

Imdb score = 8.2 and is currently number 130 in Imdb's top 250 films of all time.

9/10
Tape - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0275719) 2001
This very clever independent film stars only three people including Uma Thurman and her (soon to be ex) husband Ethan Hawke.  It is all shot in a motel room with an on suite bathroom.  All three are friends from High School with issues to resolve.

Imdb score = 7.1.

8/10
Waking Life - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0243017) 2001
Waking life is a very deep and philosophical animated film. It was actually shot using film and different artists have painted over it.  The film discusses dreams, reality and perception.  I'm going to have to watch it a few more times to fully understand it.

Imdb score = 7.5.

9/10
