October 2003 - Quick Film Reviews

Awakenings - (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099077/)

1990
Awakenings is based upon a true story and stars Robert De Niro as a catatonic mental patient and Robin Williams as his Psychiatrist.  Robin Williams treats his catatonic patients with a new drug and they awake after decades of not moving.  This is definitely a tearjerker and has the powerful message that you should live life to the fullest.

Oscar nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor (De Niro).

Imdb score = 7.4

8/10

Kill Bill Vol. 1 - (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0266697/)

2003
This the first half of Quentin Tarantino's fourth film.  It is more violent and gory then his previous movies.  Tarantino excels at grim, violent, gory films and Kill Bill is Tarantino's tribute to classic kung fu and samurai movies.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 stars Uma Thurman as an assassin seeking revenge against her former colleagues, members of the 'The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad'.  Lucy Liu stars as one of these members, now the head of Tokyo's organised crime.  This film is full of sword fighting, with limbs and heads being cut off.  In one particularly amazing scene Uma sword fights against 88 henchmen of Lucy Liu's gang.

Imdb score = 8.3 and is currently number 93 in Imdb's top 250 films of all time.

9/10

Life of David Gale, The - (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0108906)

2003
The Life of David Gale, stars Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet, both put on excellent performances.  Kevin Spacey plays a Philosophy Professor who has spent years campaigning to save the life's of those on death row.  Kevin is convicted of the rape and murder of a fellow death penalty opponent and ends up on death row himself.  Kate Winslet plays an investigative journalist who interviews Kevin in the days leading up to his execution.  This is both a grim and powerful film with a number of twists.

Imdb score = 6.9

9/10
